Day 1
6:00-6:30– Introduction Activity (Name Game); write out name, e-mail address, and phone number then expectations of course, teacher, self (on index cards that instructor keeps and re-addresses the day of Final Exam)
6:30-6:45– Laptop set-up and flash card distribution
6:45-7:00 – “Who Am I?” Finding one’s writing voice
7:00-7:30 – “How to Write Reflections;” model with Khalil Gibran’s quote “A friend who is far away is sometimes much nearer than one who is at hand. Is not the mountain far more awe-inspiring and more clearly visible to one passing through the valley than to those who inhabit the mountain?”

Day 2
6:00-6:05 – Laptop set-up and pass out journal notebooks
6:05-6:30– Biopoem
6:30-7:00– “This I Believe: Lesson 1;” identifying Personal Essay, Personal Narrative, Personal Memoir (an essay that considers the relationship between a memorable aspect of their personal experience and its broader political, social, cultural, educational significance. The experience can be common, intense, tragic, or even humorous, but it must also reveal its relationship to the way we negotiate our lives, our political beliefs, or our roles in society.); show models on SmartBoard
7:00-7:30 – “This I Believe: Lesson 3: What Do You Think? Exercise” (individually); highlight three that you could write about

Day 3
6:00-6:05 – Laptop Set-up
6:05-6:25 – “I Am Poem” (http://ettcweb.lr.k12.nj.us/forms/iampoem.htm)
6:25-6:45 – “This I Believe: Lesson 3: Show Me the Money” (partners)
6:45-7:15 – “Prewriting” PowerPoint presentation; the “Show Me the Money” and “Seeing is Believing” as forms of prewriting
7:15-7:30 - Choose a different form of prewriting to enhance your “Show Me the Money” topic that is based on personal experience with the goal of writing a personal essay

Day 4
6:00-6:05 – Laptop set-up
6:05-6:15 – “Abstractions Poem”
6:15-6:30 – “Writing Thesis Statements” PowerPoint presentation
6:30-7:00 – Write up a thesis statement for “Show Me the Money;” focus on the belief or insight that you will be writing about in your essay (COLLECT THESIS STATEMENTS)
7:00-7:30 – “Thesis Statement Checklist” modeling using a student-volunteer’s thesis

Day 5
6:00-6:05 – Laptop set-up
6:05-6:30 – “Personal Writing Worksheet”
6:30-6:45 – “Thesis Statement Checklist” using “What Do You Think Thesis Statements” as models
6:45-7:00 – “First Draft” PowerPoint presentation
7:00-7:30 – Write introduction around thesis statement; ALL first draft essays are due by the midterm

Day 6
6:00-6:05 – Laptop set-up
6:05-6:30 – Introduction to www.etutoring.org
6:30-7:30– “Writing the Personal Essay” youtube video; continue writing introductory paragraph around the thesis statement; if finished, upload to www.etutoring.org and ask for feedback on the thesis statement (follow the checklist)

Day 7
6:00-6:05– Laptop set-up
6:05-6:15 – Check www.etutoring.org for feedback
6:30-7:30 – Write the first draft of essay

Day 8
6:00-6:05– Laptop set-up
6:05-6:30 – “Constructivist Poem” http://home.online.no/~anlun/gram-po.htm
6:30-7:30– “Learning to Write a Personal Narrative” youtube short video; continue writing personal essay (PRINT EACH ESSAY); give “Self Editing Checklist” worksheets to students who are done so they can edit each other’s work

Day 9

6:15-6:45 – Midterm Exam review (personal essay, personal narrative and memoir, thesis statements, 7 steps of Writing Process, prewriting techniques, first drafting, peer editing); “Thesis Statement MR”
6:45-7:30 – Finish writing first draft, self-edit paper, proofread someone else’s paper (due by Day 10)

Day 10
6:00-6:15 – Express how you feel so far about the midterm exam. Do you feel you studied to your best potential? Why or why not? Did you take into consideration the Test-Taking Assessment when studying? What grade would you give yourself and why?
6:15-6:30 – Midterm Exam review (personal essay, personal narrative and memoir, thesis statements, 7 steps of Writing Process, prewriting techniques, first drafting, peer editing; I-Search 200-words reflection)

Day 11

6:05-6:15 – Is it easier to edit one’s own essay or edit someone else’s essay? Why?
6:15-6:30 – “6 Traits of Revision” PowerPoint presentation
6:30-6:45 – “The Art of Revision” by Wendy Burke
6:30-7:00 – SmartBoard model “Revision Checklist” using a student-volunteer’s essay
7:00-7:30 - Check personal essay and work on necessary revisions using “Revision Checklist” (essays due Day 12)

Day 12
6:00-6:05 – Laptop set-up
6:05-6:15 – What do you think about working on a writing assignment with someone else?
6:15-6:30 – “Writing Conferencing” PPT
6:30-6:40 – Assign cooperative writing assignment (poster paper & markers)
6:30-7:30 – Writing conferences while students work on their cooperative writing assignments OR paragraph/sentence strips; final drafts due Day 13

Day 13

6:05-6:15 – J: Why is it awkward to read your paper out loud to your peers (Peer Conferencing) when you have made the necessary revisions?

6:45-7:00 – SmartBoard “Self-Editing Checklist;” model with a student-volunteer essay
6:45-7:00 – Self-edit personal essays based on checklist and conferencing
7:00-7:30 – Make the necessary revisions based on “Self-Editing Checklist;” hand in personal essays

Day 14
6:00-6:17– If you had to define yourself to a stranger, offer a definition of who you are in the same way a definition is written in a dictionary, what would that definition be and why
6:17-6:30– Read “What is a Definition Essay?”
6:30-7:00 – Prewriting Definition Essay, “60 Topic Suggestions;” complete “Definition Prewriting Diagram”; e.g. immigration (According to www.thefreedictionary.com, immigration means, “To enter and settle in a country or region to which one is not native.” However, nowadays, immigration is more associated with stereotypes and racial profiling.)
7:00-7:30 – Choose a different form of Prewriting technique or strategy about the definition term you will be writing about

Day 15
6:00-6:15– “Definition of Stranger” by Idra Novey Think-Aloud
6:15-6:30 – SmartBoard a model of an outline based on the word Immigration
6:30-7:00 – Choose the best dictionary definition and then write a personal definition; write a thesis statement using the “Thesis Statement Checklist”
7:00-7:30 – Based on the Definition Prewriting Diagram and the prewriting technique, write an outline of how you will write the essay

Day 16
6:00-6:05 – Laptop set-up
6:05-6:15 – You are a reporter for the local newspaper and have to choose one word to define the East Hartford Adult Education program. What would the word be and why?
6:15-6:30 – Finalize outline
6:30-7:30 – Write the introductory paragraph of definition essay
7:00-7:30 – Continue writing first draft

Day 17
6:00-6:05 – Laptop set-up
6:05-6:15 – J: What word did you choose to write your Definition Essay about and why did you choose it. Be specific?
6:15-7:30 – Complete the first draft of Definition Essays (due Day 16)

Day 16

6:05-6:15 – Use www.etutoring.org to focus on sentence structure (run-on and fragment sentences)
6:15-6:30 – Using the “Revision Checklist” revise definition essays
6:30-7:00 – Self-edit essays using “Self-Editing Checklist”
7:00-7:30 – “Peer Edit with Perfection” PPT

6:15-6:30 – SmartBoard “Peer Editing Form” using student-volunteer essay

Day 18

6:15-7:00 – Edit definition essays based on peer editing rather than Writing Conferences

Day 19

6:15-6:30 – In pairs, brainstorm at least 10 places online and offline where you could publish your essays; list on board
6:30-7:30 – Make final changes to essays in order to upload to Wikispace

6:00-6:17– J: Write a reflection on the entire course, collection of HW assignments, re-address expectations, and completion of Winter 2011-2012 Evaluation
